Susan Carol Mohn, 80, of Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025, after extended illness. Born in San Antonio, TX to Arthur Christopher Chaffe and Thelma Joan Haynes (nee), Susie was their older child who enjoyed reading and active living activities, especially hiking and taking/teaching exercise classes.
Susie attended MacArthur High School where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Carroll. She graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. Subsequently, she received a Master of Science, also in education from Georgia State University in Atlanta, focusing on reading problems and how to resolve them.
Susie’s career as an elementary school teacher and reading specialist spanned 26 years beginning in Austin, then primarily in Atlanta, DeKalb County. Her creativity and innovation in presenting learning concepts to students was a point of light for the education profession. Formally recognized at both local and state levels for her teaching excellence, she frequently paired in team teaching with colleagues to transfer her creative approaches.
Susie and her husband of 58 years retired to Polk County in 2004 after vacationing extensively in the western North Carolina mountains. She and Carroll founded the Friends of the Library Book Club (coed) here in Polk County and are Life Members of the Polk County Historical Association.
Susie excelled professionally but viewed her family as her greatest accomplishment. Seeing family members succeed was her joy. She was the loving wife of Norman Carroll Mohn and devoted mother to Amy (predeceased) and Callie. These two daughters have given Susie and Carroll four wonderful grandchildren.
A family memorial service will be held at a later date.
