Richard Orville Surfus

Richard O. Surfus, 83, of Columbus, NC, formerly of Flat Rock, died Wednesday, May 24th, 2023.

Born October 24, 1939, in Garrett, Indiana, he was the son of the late William A. Surfus and Pauline C. Case.

Mr. Surfus lived most of his life in Fenton, Michigan.  He was a Navy Veteran and an avid golfer. He was a life-long employee of General Motors in the Engineering department and traveled much of his career. He had been retired for 31 years and stayed active golfing, playing billiards, and doing crossword puzzles. He was also a part-time resident of Florida for many years. He moved to the Hendersonville/Flat Rock area in North Carolina in 2015 after the death of his wife, Katherine, to be closer to his family.  He had many friends and will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Survivors include his son, Rick Surfus (Robbin) of Greer, S.C.; daughter, Sheri Coules of Fletcher, N.C.; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Ronald and Reginald Surfus.

A memorial service will be 6:30 pm on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Saint John's in the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Flat Rock, NC.
