Odessa Young Summey

Odessa Young Summey, age 101, my mother and best friend, of Columbus, NC, passed away on September 19, 2022.

She was born in West Greenville, SC, and is the daughter of the late George William Young and Leone Barton Young.  She was raised at Brandon Cotton Mill Community and graduated from Parker High School in 1939.  She married James Matthew Summey, Sr. on the same day. They moved to Florida in 1948, where for many years she was Superintendent of the Young People Department at North Miami First Baptist Church.

In 2003 Odessa moved to Green Creek, NC, with her daughter and son-in-law. She lived in her own home until she passed away.

She is predeceased by her husband, James Matthew Summey, Sr; son, James Matthew Summey, Jr; sister, Marian Smith; brother, Bill Young; and her grandson, John Summey.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan (Larry) Vann of Green Creek, NC; granddaughter, Janeen Murray (Len) of Tamarac, FL; daughters-in-law, Mary Summey of North Miami, FL, and Sally Summey of WPB, FL; sister-in-law, Margie Young of Greenville, SC; nephew, Greg Young, Easley, SC; and niece, Lisa (Robby) Brill of Pelzer, SC.

This lovely Christian lady will surely be missed.
