Lois Helen Porter peacefully and graciously passed from this world on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Born Lois Helen McGraw to parents Ada and Walker McGraw, she and her five siblings were fostered or adopted as young children by different families after the death of their parents. Fortunately, at age 8, Helen found her forever home with Rafe and Melinda "Lindy" Camp and grew up in the fairytale setting of the Estate of Kenmure in Flat Rock.
She married (the now late) J. B. Porter, of Tryon, NC, and had 4 children, the late Debbie Porter Anders, Kathy Porter of Hendersonville, the late Teresa "Terri" Lively, and Gary Porter of Hendersonville (Susie Glaspy Porter). Grandchildren, the late Jeremy Anders, Cory Anders, Michael B. Frantz, Erin Frantz, Christopher Griffin, Jonathan Porter, the late Mark Lively, Jr., Kevin Porter and Laney Porter, and many great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Lois, better known to most everyone as "Mom", was the matriarch of her family for many years.
Lois spent many years working at General Electric and Kimberly-Clark, where she made lifelong friends. For the last 20 years, Lois made her home at her Parkside Commons Apartments in the old school building where she attended elementary school in East Flat Rock. She made many close friends there and was unofficially the after-hours "go-to" person and everyone's "key-holder" On any sunny day, you could find her out back in the gazebo, chatting with neighbors and enjoying her retirement.
Lois dreamed of winning the lottery and being able to donate her winnings to St Jude's Children's Research Hospital. She wanted to visit and give her love to the children being treated there. She would be honored to know that contributions are made to St. Jude's in lieu of flowers, https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html
Her gentle soul was adored by family and friends, and she will always be remembered with the same love she so generously gave to all.
All are welcome to attend the celebration of her life, which will be held at Upward Baptist Church, 901 Upward Rd, Flat Rock, NC on August 3rd, 2025, at 3 p.m.., with Pastor Andy Craver officiating.
