Grace Kellogg Obituary

Grace Helen Kellogg, 88, of Tryon, NC passed away peacefully November 2, 2024. Grace was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, teacher and friend.

Grace was born on June 15, 1936 to Arthur Osmond and Helen Annette (Harris) Kellogg.  In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her three brothers, Gerald Kellogg, Donald Kellogg and James Kellogg.

After graduating from Union Springs Academy in 1953, Grace received a scholarship to attend Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts to pursue a career in teaching.  She began teaching elementary education at the age of 19 and during her career taught students in grades 1-8.  She taught school for 43 years, both in New York and South Carolina.  A large portion of her teaching career was in Cortland, NY in a small school with just 3 teachers. After relocating to South Carolina, Grace continued her teaching career at Columbia Junior Academy. Following her retirement from teaching at age 61 she went on to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and enjoyed her work with clients at Tryon Estates until retiring at age 76. Grace was a natural caregiver, dedicating herself to taking care of her mother until her passing.

Early in her teaching career, Grace was diagnosed with cancer resulting in the removal of her left arm.  Grace was left-handed at the time but even this didn’t slow her down.  Grace leaned on her faith and quickly returned to the teaching career she loved.  Within 5 minutes of meeting Grace you would forget about this difference as she never allowed this additional challenge to stop her from anything, accomplishing everything she set her mind to.

Grace enjoyed spending time with her friends and family but most especially her little dogs, most recently her Shih-Tsu, Suzy, who she loved to take for long walks. Grace made friends wherever she went and often made trips up and down the East coast to visit them.  Although her travel slowed down in recent years, she still enjoyed sharing about her travels, including her trip to Europe.

Grace was a devoted member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, having been raised in the church since childhood.  Her faith was the most important thing in her life and most recently she was a member of the Tryon Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was a Sabbath School kindergarten teacher for many years, as well as a Deaconess.  Grace often spent her time on her own personal ministry making calls to the sick and shut-ins to offer them support and encouragement.  She was a source of support to many, including church members, friends and family.

Grace is survived by her nieces and nephews, her beloved canine companion Suzy, and many close friends and former students whose lives she touched.

Service details to be announced at a later date.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Williamstown NY.
