Franklin Edward Harrod

Franklin “Frank” Edward Harrod most recently of Columbus, NC died peacefully and unexpectedly in his sleep in the early morning hours of July 14, 2019, at the age of 63 in his son’s home.

Frank would not mind being remembered as a well-read, deep andindependent thinker, philosopher of sorts, devoting much of his life and passion into creative pursuits as an artist. His preferred mediums were oil paint on canvas and ballpoint pen on paper, but he is also well remembered for being a billboard artist in the Raleigh area for many years and as the artist who designed the Carolina Mudcats’ logo and mascot. Frank was also an imaginative writer, sometimes under the pen-name of Rogir Sitrom (rigor mortis, spelled backwards), and he enjoyed inventing and playing intricate strategy games (he was ruthless-just ask the kids).

He treasured honesty and respect in all of his relationships. He was a minimalist, preferring a simple life unburdened with the bells and whistles most of us consider necessities. He loved quiet solitude and communing with nature, but nothing brought him more joy in his later years than being with his grandson, Leif, the joy of his life. Frank was born on April 7, 1956, in Nyack, NY to Mr. Clifford Edward Harrod, Jr. and Mrs. Adele Marie Hefner Harrod. The little family moved to Dover, OH, where they grew to a large family of eight with the addition of his siblings: Debra Sue, Nanette Marie, Gordon Lee, Timothy David, and Denise Kay. When Frank was 11 years old, the family moved to Raleigh, NC. He graduated from Sanderson High School, where he had been greatly influenced by his art teacher, Bob Rankin. He began his art career as a sign painter and billboard artist; back when those huge billboards were hand painted by artists on large panelsinside large warehouse-type shops.

Frank came close to marrying once,to a good woman, Cindy (Helms) Walker, but instead kept her as a true friend for life as she is mother of his only son, Ian – who Frank adored beyond measure. Hannah and Dylan Walker grew up with "Ian's Dad" in their lives. No holiday (or any occasion where good food was on hand) was complete without Frank in attendance.  Ian's sweetheart, Shannah Campo, was Frank's painting partner, occasional chauffeur and dear friend.

The mountains of western North Carolina eventually enticed Frank and his brother Gordon (a fellow artist), along with their families, to settle there 20 or someyears ago.

Frank is well-loved by his large family, including his many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all.

The family of Frank Harrod will have a private service in his honor.
