Don Arthur Horsewood, 88, died peacefully on October 12, 2024, at his home community, Tryon Estates, in Columbus, NC.
Born in Albion, IN, on May 12, 1936, to David and Mildred Horsewood, Don grew up on the family farm, was the HS basketball team manager, and enjoyed competing in 4H Fair animal competitions.
At age 17, Don served in the Air Force then returned to IN and completed an MBA at Indiana University. While at IU he met, and in 1960 married, the former Carol Battles (d. 1997) with whom he had three children: Donna, David, and Susan. Don was fortunate to also marry Susan Brown Rentz in 2002, thereby immediately expanding his family to include Casey and Patrick Rentz.
His career began with the Atomic Energy Commission (now Dept. of Energy) upon graduation, and he retired as the Director of the Organization and Personnel Division for DOE’s Oak Ridge Operations in 1984. During his career he received a Presidential Letter of Commendation for his contribution to the improvement of government operations. He was known as a mentor, friend, and man of integrity.
Don loved his family, cherishing time together especially at annual beach vacations and Thanksgiving celebrations. He delighted in his grandchildren’s adventures and accomplishments and was very supportive of family but never provided unsolicited advice. His calming presence could quiet any baby and relax any dog. He was a good listener, believed in responsibility, integrity, and hard work, but when the time was right for fun his giggle was infectious.
Don is survived by his wife; five children: Donna Milam (Scott), David Horsewood (Sharon), and Susan Stines (Reid), Casey Wayne (Wayne Himelsein), and Patrick Rentz; eight grandchildren: Samuel, Daniel, Carly, Max, Ryan, Jake, Scarlett, and Gavin; brother Jerry Horsewood (Deanna); brother-in-law Lee Battles (Cathy), sister-in-law Roberta Horsewood, sister-in-law June Darby; and many other family members and friends across the country.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, brothers Max (Lois) Horsewood and Wayne Horsewood, and brother-in-law Michael Brown.
