Claire Lorraine Cashau, 94, of Columbus, N.C., passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, at Tryon Estates.
Born March 6, 1930, in Easton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Freda (Fulmer) Daub. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, George R. Cashau (d. 2014), and four of her five siblings: Joycelyn, Wayne, Bruce, and Dale.
She was a former member of Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church and Tryon Presbyterian Church.
After graduating from Wilson Area High School in Easton, Claire met George at a local dance. They married in 1951. While raising their family in Phillipsburg, N.J., Claire was a self-employed seamstress and later worked as a secretary for a psychiatric practice before relocating in 1982 to Oakton, Va. There, she joined a local art studio to rekindle her passion for painting.
Claire was a talented artist, specializing in oils and watercolors. Her paintings were displayed and sold in multiple studios, and widely admired by residents and visitors in the Tryon community since 2003. Ten years prior to settling at Tryon Estates, the Cashaus planned their move to the Outer Banks, where Claire delighted in assisting with the design of their dream home. She had a natural gift for organizing creative projects.
Friends and family could count on Claire/Mom/GG to spark cheer with her upbeat smile and sense of humor, even on a family Zoom call. She was a gracious hostess, and always enjoyed socializing, whether playing bridge, designing jewelry, dabbling in needlepoint and knitting, or joining a group outing.
Claire is survived by a son, Jeffrey George Cashau (Vicki) of Eureka, S.D.; daughters, Susan E. Simmons (Jonathan) of Adamstown, Md., and Amy C. Lear, Newtown, Pa.; seven grandchildren: Nicole Santana (Jorge), Anthony L. Martino, Jr. (Katie), Valerie Palmer (Jason), Patrick Martino (Justine), James Simmons (Laura), Collin Cashau, and Gavin Cashau; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a sister, Judy, and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life is planned for March 15, 2025 at Tryon Estates.
