Carolyn Self Penley was taken into the arms of Jesus on July 24, 2023 at her residence surrounded by family.
She was born in Asheville on February 18, 1934, to James Robert and Mary Elizabeth Duckett Self.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 infant siblings, and one grandson, William McCall. She is survived by 4 daughters, Margo Easter (Calvin) of Alpharetta, GA, Tarsha Neal (Jerry) of Horse Shoe, NC, Sonya Wieneke of Cleveland, TN, and Tia Taylor of Charlotte, NC. Grandchildren are O’Neal McCall (Pamela), Rob Neal (Daphne), Austin Wieneke, Casey Taylor, Caitlyn Taylor. Great-granddaughters Molly Neal, Christina McCall, Zoe Desvaristes, and Sianni Perez.
Carolyn graduated from Sand Hill High School and from Tennessee Temple College with a Bachelor in Music.
When her girls were young and in school, she was the ideal homemaker; sewing clothes, baking, canning seasonal foods; and teaching daughters to play piano. She taught elementary school for a few years; and later owned and operated 2nd hand book stores locally.
Carolyn was very active in her church activities. She had been a member of First Baptist Church in Asheville for over 40 years and taught Sunday School until the last couple of years.
There will be a celebration of her life in the chapel of First Baptist Church in Asheville, NC at 11 am on Saturday, August 26, 2023.
A visitation will begin at 10 am.
The family are very thankful for the assistance of Four Seasons Hospice who were with us her last days.
