Charmain Herman Obituary

Charmain K Herman, 97 of Columbus, NC died peacefully at Ridge Rest Assisted Living on July 27, 2018.

Charmain was born to good parents on June 3, 1921 at the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Battle Creek Michigan to Rosenda John Manzano and Katherine Amelia Meyer Manzano. They attended the Battle Creek Tabernacle. She had five younger brothers and is survived by three, Elder David Manzano of Harriman, Tennessee, Ben Manzano and Carol of Lodi, California and Vern Manzano and Yolanda of Sacramento, California. Since she had no sisters she had many girlfriends. Charmain had a normal childhood with much swimming both summer and winter. Her hobbies were reading, sewing, swimming and ice skating.

Charmain was always busy babysitting her brothers so when she turned 16 she worked part time at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. After she graduated high school she worked for a year and then attended Madison College in Madison, Tennessee where she could earn and learn. Three of her girlfriends went with her. Her friends wanted to marry rich guys but she prayed to God to find a good husband and she did, the best. She met James Herman and they were married on December 18, 1941 which lasted 69 years.

Charmain was a school teacher for the Seventh-day Adventist educational school system and loved the 5th and 6th grades. She taught in California, Louisiana, Arkansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Florida and Alabama.

She was a wonderful homemaker and loved to entertain guest and family members with her delicious meals and homemade bread. She cherished the name “grandma” while her husband called her “Ms Herman”.

In 1984 Jim and Charmain retired and moved to Columbus, North Carolina to be near their son, Ron and his family. They enjoyed their golden years together and were members of Tryon Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Surviving are four children, Elder James K. Herman Jr. and Ellen of Collegedale, Tennessee, Ronald W. Herman and Linda of Columbus, North Carolina,  Jean K. Smith and Ron of West Fort Meyers, Florida, Gary R. Herman and Dawn of Arlington, Texas, 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 2:30 PM. Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the Tryon Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2820 Lynn Road, Tryon, NC 28782.

Memorials can be made to 3ABN at P.O. Box 220 West Frankfort, Illinois 62896.
